Hilton ‘small change’ fundraiser
Guests staying at Hilton London Heathrow Airport will be using their small change to make a big difference to disadvantaged children over the coming months as part of Hilton in the Community Foundation’s annual fundraising campaign.
“Small Change, Big Difference” will be running in Heathrow throughout October, November and December this year. The campaign invites hotel guests staying at selected Hilton Worldwide hotels to add an optional £1 onto their room bill during their stay. The campaign has now raised over £835,000 for children’s charities since its inception in 2004.
Jurgen Sutherland, Hilton Worldwide area general manager said, “This is a very worthwhile campaign and one that I hope our generous guests will support once again. Working together your small change really can add up to make a real difference to children’s lives”.
Hilton in the Community Foundation has supported local children since 2000 with grants supporting several local good causes including Chestnut Tree House Children’s Hospice, Cosmic (Children of St Mary’s Intensive Care) and St Catherine’s Primary School.
Delta offers Yotel arrivals facilitiy
Premium passengers with Delta are being offered free use of a Yotel room on arrival at Heathrow’s Terminal 4, with facilities which include a shower, bed, flat-screen TV and wifi access.
The airline believes it will prove particularly popular with passengers who want to freshen-up after an overnight transatlantic flight. But it faces stiff competition from other airlines, such as British Airways and Virgin Atlantic, which have invested heavily in arrivals facilities at Heathrow.
Use of the cabin is available to Delta passengers .as well as those booking with joint venture partners Air France and KLM, travelling in Business Elite on Delta-operated flights from Atlanta, New York, Minneapolis and Detroit.
Diamond and Platinum Skymiles Medallion members, and Flying Blue elite members are also eligible for the service.
Armin Venencie, Delta’s regional sales director for the UK, Ireland and Scandinavia, says: “Our premium travellers expect the convenience of an arrivals facility after a long-haul flight. Our partnership with Yotel offers passengers a convenient, private and comfortable space to change before an important meeting, or freshen up before getting on the road.”
Heathrow’s first ever hotel reopens

Located in an acre of grounds that overlook a 13th century church and a village green, the hotel first opened in 1951. The number of rooms was only 19 to begin with but now boasts 54 rooms, together with a meeting room which can hold up to 60 people. The restaurant is now under the watchful eye of executive chef Manuel Zamora, and overlooks the hotel gardens.
Kate Green, general manager said: “The Stanwell is full of character and we believe this hotel will bring something different to the local community as well as transient guests. We are already taking bookings for weddings, lunches, dinners and training courses. The feedback has been very positive, especially about the very reasonable bar prices.”

Boutique country hotel near Heathrow
Just a 30 minute taxi ride from Heathrow and tucked away in one of the area’s most picturesque villages sits the Sanctum on the Green, a gem of a boutique hotel.
It’s the sister hotel to the trendy Sanctum Soho and offers a similar rock and roll experience but in a quintessentially English environment – dark veneers and glass beaded wallpaper combined with log fires and oak beams.
The nine-bedroomed hotel in the Berkshire village of Cookham Dean is the brainchild of Mark Fuller who owns the Sanctum Soho and combines the rural and urban themes. A hot tub and heated pool provide a distraction for guests.
“The idea of Sanctum is affordable glamour and a private experience, which people want. We’ve t aken the rock and roll aspect of the London hotel and put it in a country hotel to make it a stylish yet relaxing place to stay” said Fuller.

Crowne Plaza offers laptop sleep aid
Business travellers staying at the Crowne Plaza, Heathrow, are being offered a new service to help them wind down at night.
The hotel is offering clients a chance to schedule a call from staff at 7pm local time reminding them to turn their laptops off.
The hotel said that the initiative comes in response to research which revealed many business travellers struggle to stop working and wind down before going to bed. Almost two-thirds of those asked said they believed 7pm was the ideal time to stop working.
Sleep expert and psychologist Dr Chris Idzikowski said: “While technology is sometimes hard to live without, it can become our worst enemy when it comes to sleep.
“Checking emails just before bed halts the production of sleep-enhancing melatonin and has the same effect as drinking a double espresso.”
Brits were shown to be some of the worst when it came to turning off their technology with 27 per cent stating they took it to bed with them.
Disability access award for Sofitel
The Heathrow Sofitel has been praised for its disability facilities winning the Bronze Award for Access Excellence at the prestigious M and IT awards ceremony in London.
The Access Excellence award, the new name for the Disabled Services Award, is presented to conference venues, stadiums, airports, universities and other iconic public buildings.
The Sofitel London Heathrow was the only hotel short listed and was commended not only on the quality and range of facilities but the staff training, awareness and delivery of hospitality excellence in terms of guest and visitor accessibility needs.
A statement from the hotel welcomed the award and said “at the heart of Sofitel London Heathrow is the luxurious ‘art de recevoir’ and noble ‘hôtellerie savoir-faire’ – legendary Sofitel values that offer every guest moments of ‘plaisir’, élégance and ‘bien être’ during their stay”.
Surinder Arora, chairman of Arora Hotels, which runs the venue under the Sofitel franchise, said: “it is not an airport hotel; it’s a luxury hotel which just happens to be at an airport. Indeed, we have created a destination hotel in its own right which combines the ultimate in accessibility with world class facilities.
“Winning this prestigious award is recognition of the highest standards of service, accessability and genuine hospitality that our team consistently delivers to all of our guests. With such a range of facilities in the hotel we have always focused on excellence and this has brought many prestigious events to the hotel, most notably the MS society on three occasions since opening”, he added.
