Airline check-in facilities at Paddington
Self-service check-in facilities and flight information screens have been installed at Paddington station ready for use by travellers using Heathrow Express.
The scheme is initially available for passengers with just a few airlines, but Heathrow Express hope that it will soon be extended and be widely used as a quick and convenient way of preparing for a flight.
Heathrow Express Managing Director Richard Robinson stated: “At Heathrow Express we never underestimate the stress of travelling and continually strive to enhance our service through leading innovations. People do not always get the opportunity to print their boarding pass before getting to the airport. By introducing this service at Paddington, customers have the opportunity to print their boarding pass and avoid the hassle of queuing for check in at the airport. Customers can then proceed direct to their airline’s designated bag-drop if they have hold luggage. Customers can rest assured on the train because they already know where they are sitting on the plane.”
With an average of 40,000 flights a year leaving Heathrow, it is hoped that the launch of these new enhanced information services will help reduce confusion for passengers trying to find their way to the right check in area.
The facility consists of three machines located below the screens and next to the Heathrow Express ticket office. The machines are easy to use with touch screen facilities. Customers can print their boarding pass and view their flight information before they even arrive at the airport, helping them to feel more at ease on their way to Heathrow. The machines are initially available for passengers travelling on four airlines: Delta Air Lines, Finnair, Iberia and United Airlines.
The Flight Information Display Screens show the day’s flights, the airlines, the terminal and departure times. They are placed by the Paddington Station Heathrow Express ticket office and half way down platforms 6 and 7, which are dedicated solely to Heathrow Express.
Vienna route for bmi
bmi, British Midland International, is launching a new route between London Heathrow and Vienna from March 28.
The route will be operated using an Airbus A320 aircraft in conjunction with Austrian Airlines, also part of Star Alliance, to offer five flights a day, seven days a week.
Dominic Paul, Managing Director bmi commented: “We are delighted to announce our new service between London and Vienna which will offer great schedule flexibility and competitive prices. Customers travelling with bmi will have the opportunity to discover the business opportunities and cultural attractions the city of Vienna has to offer plus benefit from good onward connections to Central and Eastern Europe through Austrian Airlines’ Vienna hub.”
Christina Debbah, VP Global Sales, Austrian Airlines added: “We are thrilled to be working with bmi through our shared Lufthansa ownership. bmi’s collaboration on the route will provide customers with a stronger schedule and greater breadth of connections. London is a popular city and Heathrow a key hub so we welcome the opportunity of working with bmi, increasing links between Vienna and the city of London.”
The new route announcement comes as bmi relaunches its UK & Ireland product as the airline continues its programme of developments across its network.
Return fares with bmi from London Heathrow to Vienna start from just £99 return including taxes, bookable at flybmi.com
Shared T4 lounge for Sky Team
Sky Team have opened their new communal lounge and check-in area in Heathrow’s Terminal 4, saying it will be a “template” for the future.
With all the Alliance’s carriers moving to the newly revamped terminal, the new facilities will available to Sky Team passengers irrespective of their route or airline – a theme which they plan to replicate at other airports
“The move to Terminal 4 gives us an opportunity to present ourselves as an Alliance rather than in a fragmented way. This is a template to be used in other parts of the network” Sky Team’s chairman Leo van Wijk told journalists
Travellers with the alliance’s members, which include Air France, KLM, Alitalia, Delta and Aeroflot, will use shared check-in desks, self-service kiosk and bag drop off locations.
Once airside, premium passenger can use the lounge where designers have created a light, airy feel with features such as the ‘living wall’ – a mass of carefully nurtured plants – an oxygen room, a spa and a wine bar. Sky Team say that the move will bring imroved facilities for passengers and cost saving for its members.
Continental boosts Newark service
Continental Airlines is to increase its schedule of flights between London/Heathrow and its New York hub, Newark Liberty International Airport, during 2010.
The airline will add a fourth daily service to the route in March and a fifth daily service in October, bringing the total number of Continental daily departures from Heathrow to seven, including its twice-daily service to Houston.
In addition, Continental announced that effective June 2, 2010 all aircraft scheduled for its flights departing Heathrow will feature new, flat bed seats in BusinessFirst, its business-class cabin.
“Heathrow-New York is a flagship route for Continental. As the leading airline in the New York market, we are excited about introducing these schedule and product improvements for our London-New York travellers,” said Jeff Smisek, the airline’s Chairman, President & Chief Executive Officer.
“All our London-New York customers will benefit from more flight options, while those travelling in BusinessFirst – whether to New York or Houston — will be assured of a flat bed seat whenever they choose to fly with us.”
